What to Wear

To make the most of your portrait experience, we ask that you follow some simple, but important guidelines regarding clothing colors and styles. Keep in mind, the ultimate goal of your portraits is to make your face the focal point.

  • Basic colors and classic styles are always timeless. Black, navy, denim, white, ivory, khaki, darker shades of green and most earth tones are great colors.
  • Solid and muted colors are preferred as to not distract from the subjects in the portrait.
  • Clothing choices should reflect the type of session you're having created.  For example, we don't recommend formal attire for a casual outdoor portrait.
  • Long sleeved shirts or blouses are highly recommended.  This advice is especially important for women. The right type of clothing will compliment all figures.
  • Ladies, remember to apply your make-up a bit heavier than usual. Your normal make-up will be over powered by the photographic lighting.
  • Men should shave as close to their session as possible.

Please Avoid...

  • Extreme contrast in colors selected.  Stay with similar color tones.
  • Bold patterns.
  • Short or cap sleeves.
  • Schedule your hair cut about one week before your session to avoid that fresh cut look.

Children

For fun images of your children, you can break the clothing rules. Things like a bathing suit, painter's smock or dad's shirt can add a touch of personality and creativity to your images. If you can't decide what to bring, bring it all and we'll help you select the best choice.

Props add extra dimension and personalize your portraits. Props you bring from home often have sentimental value and add to the overall emotion of your portrait. A favorite toy, teddy bear, the blanket your baby came home in, first shoes and other such items can turn a beautiful portrait into a true family heirloom.
